Warm, quiet and repairable one piece at a time. Where carpet tiles work in an Indian home, and where a hard floor is still better.

Carpet tiles work well at home in bedrooms, children's rooms, studies, home theatres and living areas, where a warm, quiet floor matters more than mopping. They lay over a sound, flat floor, and a stained tile lifts out on its own. Keep them out of kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere damp.

Most Indian homes are floored in marble, granite or vitrified tile: easy to mop, cool in May, and cold, hard and echoing for the rest of the year. Families add rugs that slide, curl at the edges and never quite cover the space. Carpet tiles sit between a rug and a fitted carpet. They cover a room wall to wall, but come in small pieces that are easy to carry upstairs, cut around a wardrobe and replace when the inevitable spill happens.

Carpet tiles at home: the essentials

  • Best rooms: bedrooms, children's rooms, studies, home theatres, family lounges and upper-floor living areas.
  • Rooms to avoid: kitchens, bathrooms, laundry areas and floors prone to damp.
  • Floor beneath: it must be flat, firm, dry and clean; loose or hollow tiles are fixed first.
  • Repairs: a spoilt tile comes out and a spare goes in, and nothing else in the room is disturbed.
  • Format: square GAIA tiles measure 50 cm a side; GAIA planks are 25 cm wide and a metre long.

Are carpet tiles good for homes?

Yes, in the right rooms. They make a room warmer underfoot in winter, take the hard edge off footsteps and voices, and give children a softer place to sit and play than stone. Because each tile is a separate piece, a juice stain or a worn patch by the bed does not mean replacing a whole carpet: the affected tile comes up and a spare goes down. The pieces are small enough to carry up a narrow staircase and through a flat door, which a roll of fitted carpet often is not.

Which rooms in a house suit carpet tiles?

  • Bedrooms: the classic choice; a soft, warm floor for bare feet in the morning.
  • Children's rooms and playrooms: softer to sit and fall on than stone, and easy to repair after paint and play.
  • Home office or study: quieter calls and a chair that rolls without scraping.
  • Home theatre or media room: a dark carpet removes a strong floor reflection, as our guide to home theatre acoustics explains.
  • Family lounge on an upper floor: cuts the footstep noise that carries to the rooms below.
  • Kitchen, bathroom, utility and balcony: not suitable; use a hard floor, or artificial grass outdoors.

Can you lay carpet tiles over marble or vitrified tiles?

In most cases, provided the old floor is level, firmly stuck down and dry. Hollow-sounding or cracked tiles should be repaired first, and wide grout lines or lippage between tiles may need levelling so they do not show through the carpet over time. The floor must also be clean of polish and grease so the carpet tiles stay put. Our team will check the existing floor and specify the preparation and fixing before quoting.

Carpet tiles or a rug?

A rug suits a single seating area on a floor you like. Carpet tiles suit a room you want soft from wall to wall, or a large, odd-shaped space where no standard rug fits. Tiles do not curl, slide or collect dust underneath the way a loose rug does, and they can be laid as a "rug" too: a rectangle of tiles under the bed or the sofa, with a border of the existing floor around it. Because the pieces are cut on site, the shape can follow an L-shaped room or step around a built-in wardrobe.

Are carpet tiles good for children and pets?

They are practical for both, mainly because repairs are so simple. Spills, crayon and the occasional accident affect one or two tiles, which can be cleaned in place or replaced from spares. A soft floor is also kinder to small knees than stone. Choose a mid-tone, textured design rather than a pale plain one, and keep a box of spare tiles from the same order. Our guide to cleaning carpet tiles covers stains and routine care.

Do carpet tiles look like fitted carpet?

From standing height, a well-chosen design does. Textured and patterned tiles hide the joints, and laying them all in the same direction gives an almost unbroken surface. Plain, flat tiles show the grid more, which some people like as part of the look. For a room where a truly continuous, custom carpet matters, such as a formal living room, GAIA broadloom can be designed for the space; our comparison of tiles and broadloom sets out the trade-off.

How do you choose carpet tiles for a home?

  • Start with the room: mid-tones for children's rooms and lounges, any colour you like for a guest room.
  • Pick texture over plain in busy rooms; it hides marks between vacuums.
  • Choose squares for an even field, or planks to make a narrow room look longer.
  • Order every room at once, plus spares, so all the tiles come from one batch.
  • See samples on your own floor, in daylight and lamplight.

Every texture and colour is shown in the GAIA carpet tile collection.

Home carpet questions

Are carpet tiles warm in winter?

Yes. A textile floor feels far warmer underfoot than marble or vitrified tile, which is why bedrooms and lounges in North Indian homes benefit most.

Can carpet tiles be taken up when we move?

Often they can be lifted, though how easily depends on the fixing used. If you are renting, tell us at the start so we can plan the installation with that in mind.

Do carpet tiles suit a ground-floor room?

Yes, provided the floor is dry. Where rising damp or seepage is a risk, deal with it first, or choose a hard floor for that room.
