What Is GreenPro Certification? What It Means for Flooring and Acoustic Panels

Sustainability·GreenPro·Acoustic Panels

An independent Indian ecolabel, a named product and plant, and an expiry date. What GreenPro proves, and how to check a certificate.

GreenPro is India's ecolabel for building and interior products, run by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). A GreenPro certificate shows that a named product, made at a named plant, has been assessed against environmental criteria across its life cycle. GAIA's PET acoustic panels and carpet tiles are GreenPro certified.

Architects, developers and corporate buyers increasingly ask for green credentials before a product goes on a specification, and the claims they receive range from detailed certificates to a green leaf printed on a sales leaflet. GreenPro is one of the labels designed to cut through that: an independent, Indian scheme with published criteria, and a certificate that can be checked. Knowing what it does and does not cover helps you use it properly.

GreenPro in brief

  • Who runs it: the Confederation of Indian Industry, through its green building and green products councils.
  • What kind of label: a Type 1 ecolabel, awarded after independent assessment against set criteria.
  • What it looks at: the product's environmental performance across its life cycle.
  • What it covers: a specific product from a specific manufacturing plant.
  • How long it lasts: each certificate carries an expiry date and must be renewed.

What is GreenPro certification?

GreenPro is an ecolabelling programme for products used in buildings and industry, developed by CII. It is a Type 1 ecolabel, the category for labels awarded by an independent body against multi-criteria standards rather than claims a manufacturer makes about itself. The programme is accredited by the Global Ecolabelling Network, as noted in Dalmia Cement's announcement of its own GreenPro certification. Certificates are issued in the name of the CII-Green Products and Services Council.

What does GreenPro assess?

The whole life of the product rather than a single feature. A GreenPro assessment follows a life-cycle approach, so it can consider raw materials, how the product is manufactured, the energy and water used, emissions, and what happens to it at the end of its life. The exact criteria are set for each product category, which is why a certificate always names the product it applies to. That is the main difference from a single-attribute claim such as "contains recycled material", which may be true but says nothing about the rest of the product's impact.

GreenPro certificate from the CII-Green Products and Services Council for Polyester Acoustic Panels 9mm, certificate GPSFP576001, manufactured by Sanson Floorings LLP at Hyderabad, Telangana, valid till December 2027
GAIA's GreenPro certificate for 9 mm PET acoustic panels. Each thickness carries its own certificate number.

Which GAIA products are GreenPro certified?

GAIA's PET acoustic panels and GAIA carpet tiles. For the acoustic panels, each thickness has its own certificate, issued to Sanson Floorings LLP for panels made at Hyderabad, Telangana:

  • Polyester Acoustic Panels 9 mm: GPSFP576001
  • Polyester Acoustic Panels 12 mm: GPSFP576002
  • Polyester Acoustic Panels 18 mm: GPSFP576003
  • Polyester Acoustic Panels 24 mm: GPSFP576004

All four are valid until December 2027. You can see the range on the GAIA acoustic panels page and GAIA carpet tiles on the GAIA carpet tiles page. For how the panels compare with other acoustic materials, see our comparison of acoustic panels and foam.

Why do architects and buyers ask for GreenPro?

Because it gives them evidence they can put on file. A certificate from an independent Indian scheme is easier to defend in a tender, a client presentation or an ESG report than a manufacturer's own claim. Projects working towards a green building rating also look for certified products, and corporate fit-outs with sustainability targets increasingly ask for them by default. Each rating system sets its own rules on which labels count and how, so check its current requirements for your project.

How do you check a GreenPro certificate?

Read it against the product you are actually buying. A certificate that is genuine but covers a different product, plant or thickness does not support your specification. Check these five points:

  • Product name: it should match the product and variant on your order, including thickness or format.
  • Certificate number: note it on the specification so it can be traced.
  • Manufacturer: the company named should be the one supplying you.
  • Plant: the certificate names where the product is made.
  • Validity: the expiry date should cover the date of supply.

Is GreenPro the same as a non-toxic or low-VOC label?

No. GreenPro looks at a product's environmental performance across its life cycle; it is not itself a test result for indoor emissions or fire. If your project needs a specific emissions result or a fire classification, ask for the test report that shows it. A green label and a technical test report answer different questions, and a good specification asks for both where they matter.

What to send us

  • the products and thicknesses on your specification;
  • the certificates or test reports your project or client requires;
  • the green building rating or sustainability target, if there is one.

Our team will send the matching GreenPro certificates with your quotation.

GreenPro questions

Is GreenPro certification mandatory in India?

No. It is voluntary. Manufacturers apply for it, and buyers or project teams choose whether to require it.

How long is a GreenPro certificate valid?

Each certificate states its own expiry date, so check it against your supply date using the checklist above.
